Bills: 2 hidden gems on Buffalo’s 2026 roster you need to know

The Buffalo Bills enter the 2026 NFL season carrying the weight of enormous expectations. That’s nothing new for Josh Allen & Co., though. Yet while most discussions surrounding Buffalo revolve around stars like Allen, DJ Moore, Bradley Chubb, and Greg Rousseau, championships are often decided by players operating far from the spotlight. That is why the conversation about the Bills’ roster cannot stop at the household names. Among the many under-the-radar names on the roster, two stand out as potential difference-makers. Alec Anderson and Javon Solomon may not be receiving national attention today. However, both could end up playing pivotal roles in determining whether the Bills become legitimate Super Bowl champions or another talented team that falls short.

Buffalo’s aggressive offseason

The Bills’ headline transaction was trading away premium assets to acquire DJ Moore. He provides Allen with an elite weapon while inheriting a significant future financial commitment. Simultaneously, the front office rebuilt the defensive front to fit their new 3-4 philosophy. Buffalo added Bradley Chubb to bolster the pass rush while investing heavily in veterans such as CJ Gardner-Johnson and Connor McGovern.

The moves undeniably increased Buffalo’s top-end talent. However, every major acquisition came with a cost. Salary cap constraints forced difficult roster decisions. Several depth contributors departed for opportunities elsewhere. As a result, the Bills now find themselves relying on a number of less-heralded players to assume meaningful responsibilities.

That reality makes hidden contributors more important than ever. These are two who could become difference-makers.

OL Alec Anderson

For all the excitement surrounding Moore’s arrival, the success of Buffalo’s offense may depend just as much on what happens at left guard. The departure of David Edwards created a significant opening along the interior offensive line. Sure, Buffalo brought in experienced options such as Austin Corbett and Lloyd Cushenberry III. That said, Alec Anderson appears positioned to seize one of the most important jobs on the roster.

The challenge is enormous. Protecting Josh Allen has become one of the organization’s highest priorities. That’s especially true after investing heavily in offensive weapons designed to stretch defenses vertically. Those downfield concepts require time to develop. Allen’s interior pocket must remain firm against some of the NFL’s most disruptive defensive tackles.

Anderson possesses the physical tools to succeed in that role. His power and mobility make him an effective fit in Buffalo’s run schemes. Their rushing attack has also become a critical complement to Allen’s playmaking ability. Anderson’s ability to create movement in the run game could help preserve offensive balance.

If Anderson emerges as a dependable starter, the Bills could enjoy one of the conference’s most complete offenses. If he struggles, the ripple effects could extend throughout the entire unit. Few players on the roster carry a wider range of potential outcomes. That makes Anderson one of Buffalo’s most important hidden gems entering 2026.

LB Javon Solomon

Jim Leonhard’s arrival signals a major philosophical shift for Buffalo’s defense. The new 3-4 structure emphasizes versatility, disguise, and unpredictability. Players are expected to align in multiple spots and threaten pressure from various angles.

Few players on the roster seem better suited for that role than Solomon. National attention naturally gravitates toward Chubb and Rousseau. Solomon, though, offers something unique. His burst off the snap provides Buffalo with a different type of pass-rushing threat. Rather than winning solely through power, Solomon creates problems with speed, suddenness, and change of direction.

Note that Buffalo’s pass rush failed to consistently overwhelm opposing offenses last season. They finished in the middle tier of the league in several key pressure metrics. Leonhard’s scheme is designed to generate confusion, but confusion only matters if someone can finish the play. Solomon can become that player.

The challenge, however, extends beyond rushing the passer. Outside linebackers in Leonhard’s defense must process quickly and occasionally drop into coverage responsibilities. Mastering those assignments will determine whether Solomon becomes a weapon or a target for opposing offenses. Still, if he develops as expected, Solomon could become the secret ingredient that transforms Buffalo’s defense from good to dangerous.

Hidden gems, championship seasons

Super Bowl contenders are usually built around stars. Championship teams, though, are sustained by contributors who outperform expectations.

The Bills have plenty of star power. Allen remains one of the league’s premier quarterbacks. James Cook is awesome on the ground. Moore adds another dynamic dimension to the offense. Chubb and Rousseau headline an improved defense.

Yet Buffalo’s ultimate ceiling may hinge on whether players like Alec Anderson and Javon Solomon emerge as reliable difference-makers.

Anderson has the opportunity to stabilize the offensive line and help protect the franchise’s most valuable asset. Solomon has the chance to become the versatile defensive disruptor Leonhard’s scheme desperately needs.
