Bill Belichick’s Patriots dynasty gives Chiefs hope that Patrick Mahomes can win three more Super Bowls
Nothing is guaranteed in life.
Especially when it comes to building and maintaining an NFL dynasty.

Patrick Mahomes was set up to be better than Tom Brady two years ago, while Travis Kelce was living a Hollywood dream and Andy Reid was the super-cool head coach who connected Taylor Swift with Kansas City’s All-Pro tight end.
Now, Mahomes is recovering from major knee surgery, Kelce is again considering retirement, and Reid leads a Chiefs offense that has fallen from unstoppable to totally average.
New England can show Kansas City the way
But if Brady — who also tore his ACL in his ninth NFL season — can inspire Mahomes with a mid-career resurgence, the architect of the New England Patriots‘ two-decade dynasty can show Kansas City how to turn three Super Bowl trophies into six.
Bill Belichick, 73, is sadly best known in 2025 for being a losing college football coach at a basketball school, while being romantically attached to a 24-year-old.
But before The Hoodie stumbled to North Carolina, Belichick won six world championships over an 18-year span and answered a nine-season drought with three shining trophies.
“Every team has a journey and a lot of people lost faith in us early,” said Brady, after the Pats turned Pete Carroll’s goal line trickery into a stunning 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.
“But we held strong, we held together and it’s a great feeling.”
New England took over the NFL during the first decade of a new millennium, as Belichick built a system-first machine around a sixth-round QB from Michigan.
Key to Pats’ dominance was annual evolution
The Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2001, ’03 and ’04, gradually evolving from a defensive-driven unit that relied on Adam Vinatieri to beat the Greatest Show on Turf into an annual powerhouse that blended ‘Do Your Job’ with relentless football precision.
Brady became the greatest QB in NFL history, while Belichick mastered the salary-cap era by cutting aging talent early and refusing to give in to friendly sympathy.

Will Mahomes eclipse Brady in NFL history?
Right now, the gunslinger from Texas Tech would be cool with just becoming the next Peyton Manning, who fell short in his era-defining rivalry with Brady but won two Super Bowls separated by nine seasons.
As long as Mahomes cleanly returns from ACL and LCL injuries, the Chiefs theoretically have their franchise QB locked in for the next decade.
What happens if Big Red steps down?
But does Kansas City have its Belichick — a roster management artist who consistently stayed ahead of an ever-changing curve?
The Chiefs were lucky to go 15-2 last year, then were embarrassed by the far superior Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX.
This season, Kansas City’s 6-8 record is an indictment of a porous roster that has fallen behind the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West.

Yet Belichick’s best move — outside of seeing something special in the No. 199 overall pick of the 2000 draft — was reigniting the Patriots’ dynasty by taking Rob Gronkowski out of Arizona in the second round in 2010.
Pats exceled at replacing their best players
From 2003-19, New England only failed to make the playoffs once — in 2008, when Brady tore his ACL and Matt Cassel took over as QB.
The Pats returned to the Super Bowl the year after Gronk was drafted, followed up that big game defeat with back-to-back AFC Conference Championship appearances, then won it all again in 2014, ’16 and ’18.
“It just matters that we won. It was a crazy year. We had a resilient bunch of guys,” said Edelman, after New England fought off the Los Angeles Rams 13-3 in a Super Bowl LIII defined by defense — the same side of the ball that guided Brady to his first trophy in 2001.

Mike Vrabel will receive Coach of the Year votes, while Drake Maye is battling for NFL MVP.
A tough 35-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills was a reminder of New England’s massive overall improvement this year.
talkSPORT ranks the best teams in the NFL right now
Belichick was 62 when he captured his fourth Super Bowl title as the Patriots’ coach.
Reid is 67 at a time when Mahomes might not be healthy for Week 1 next season.
The Chiefs still have not found an effective replacement for Tyreek Hill, while a declining Kelce is 36-years-old but the top tight end on a roster constructed by general manager Brett Veach.
Brady was the perfect QB for New England, but Belichick was the force who powered the Patriots through transition after transition.
The Chiefs need a lasting architect if they’re going to continue their dynasty into the next decade.
Relying on Mahomes, Kelce and Reid year after year will only take Kansas City so far.
