Belgium vs Egypt prediction
Belgium were poor in Qatar three-and-a-half years ago, with a team led by an unfit Eden Hazard crashing out in the group stage after previously finishing third in 2018.
The team flattered to deceive at Euro 2024, exiting in the first knockout round to France, and going into 2026 expectations are lofty for Rudi Garcia’s outfit this summer.
Garcia’s remit is really acting as the bridge to transition from the nations ‘Golden Generation’ from the mid 2010’s and blooding a clutch of new, young talent to carry the torch going forward.
Totems of that era that really peaked in 2018, Kevin De Bruyne, Axel Witsel, Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans are still involved. But it’s Jeremy Doku who is stepping out of their shadow to become the main man.
Garcia said as much in his pre-tournament comments: “The objective is simply to finish top of the group and progress from the group stage; we’ll then see who we’re drawn against in the next rounds.
“We’re not favourites, but I prefer this underdog position, which doesn’t stand in the way of ambition.”
They will be favourites against Egypt in their Group G opener, but their ‘underdog’ tag is said a little more humble than it was four years ago.
While historically successful within Africa, Egypt have struggled to assert itself on the world stage.
This is just a fourth World Cup, for Egypt and the Pharaohs are yet to win a game in any previous appearance. Last time out in 2018, an unfit Mohamed Salah was unable to galvanize the squad, as Egypt lost all three of its group matches.
Don’t expect Egypt to dazzle, despite Salah and Man City’s Omar Marmoush’s presence, it’ll be their robustness and resilience which is the key to their success in North America. The team only conceded twice in 10 qualifying matches.
It looks like it’ll be a tricky test for Garcia’s Red Devils, an early goal to snap the Egyptian’s stubbornness would be the perfect tonic. The longer the game continues still tied, the more Egypt will fancy its chances of pulling off an upset.
Belgium vs Egypt best bets
Salah on target
For all of his accolades and goal-scoring records at club level, Mohamed Salah has only ever scored two World Cup goals in his career, back in 2018.
Having failed to qualify for the tournament in 2022, and going into 2018 undercooked, 2026 could be his best chance to make his mark at elite international level.
Egypt will be a stubborn test for Belgium and look to Salah and Marmoush’s individual quality to unlock the Red Devil’s defence.
Salah has the quality to give this new-look Belgium rearguard all sorts of problems and could easily test Thibaut Courtois on multiple occasions.
Doku stealing the show
As mentioned, the new wave of Belgian talent is emerging, but Doku has been a player that has bridged the gap between the old and new.
The Man City winger, now 24, is ready to explode on the world stage, having single-handedly at times help his club side stay in the Premier League title race for so long and win two domestic trophies in the 2025/26 season.
The forward is one of the most unrelenting attackers in the game, capable of unpicking any defence.
While De Bruyne and Lukaku are still in the team, Doku will be the man the whole nation are looking to this summer.
