Bears HC Ben Johnson’s Caleb Williams revelation suggests superstar leap is coming

The Chicago Bears have one of the best new coach-quarterback tandems in all of football with Caleb Williams under center and Ben Johnson pulling the strings on the sideline. Johnson established himself as an elite head coach in just his first season in the position, while Williams continues to climb the ranks as he enters year three.

The first season of the Johnson-Williams pairing went surprisingly well, as the Bears exceeded all expectations and made a run all the way to the Divisional Round before losing to the Los Angeles Rams.

Heading into Williams’ third season as the starter in the Windy City, and second under Johnson, the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator is excited to see the next stage in the development of his quarterback.

“Now, it looks completely different,” Johnson said. “It looks like it’s his language at this point. And that’s a good thing. So now we can move on to the next step, which I alluded to a couple days ago in the press conference, is more the post-snap execution of the play. Recognizing coverage, knowing where to go, who’s most likely to be open. And we can play a little bit faster, so that’s the fun part to me.”

Johnson and Williams went through their fair share of growing pains last season. While the Bears had one of the most efficient running games in all of football, the passing game was inconsistent and flat-out bad at times during the year. While it improved late in the season, it is still an area of improvement to look for in Chicago this fall.

Johnson is optimistic that having another year working with Williams will help in that department as their relationship continues to grow.

“I feel like I do know Caleb better now than I did before,” he added. “That’s the thing about this relationship, it’s evolving. We will always do what our quarterback does best.”

The Bears get their regular season underway on Sept. 13 with a game against the Carolina Panthers on the road.
