Barcelona vs Sevilla predictions
With one kick of the football late on Tuesday evening, Barcelona boosted their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Going into second-half stoppage time against Newcastle United, Barcelona trailed 1-0. Their opponents had been the better team for much of the match and fully deserved their lead, which they looked set to take with them to the Camp Nou for the return fixture.
Yet although Hansi Flick’s team were far from their best on the night, they refused to give up and their perseverance was rewarded in dramatic fashion.
With virtually the last attack of the game, Dani Olmo drew a foul from Malick Thiaw and Barcelona were awarded a penalty. Lamine Yamal made no mistake from 12 yards.
And so it is advantage Barcelona at the halfway point of the last-16 tie. Flick would have backed his team to triumph on aggregate even after a 1-0 defeat in England. Yamal’s goal shifted the contest further in Barcelona’s favour.
Of course, the Blaugrana are competing for glory at home as well as abroad, and a four-point lead at the top of La Liga is not sufficient for them to start taking things easy domestically.
Real Madrid recently lost back-to-back matches to hand Barcelona control of the race, but there is no reason why the same thing cannot happen to Flick’s men if they are not suitably focused.
“Right now they’re important, of course, but it’s not a done deal,” Flick said of Barcelona’s run of three league wins on the bounce. “There’s a long way to go until the end of May. There’s plenty of time and plenty of games left.”
There was a time when Sevilla were fighting to be one of La Liga’s top teams outside the big two, but their ambitions for the remainder of this campaign are far more modest.
Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Catalonia, Sevilla are a lowly 14th in the table. It is hard to see them being relegated, but a six-point cushion above the bottom three is not yet enough to guarantee Matias Almeyda’s men a place in La Liga next term.
The more optimistic members of the Sevilla fan base might argue their team is a comparable distance from the European places, but from the evidence of the season up until this point, the Nervionenses will not be competing on the continent in 2026/27.
Barcelona vs Sevilla betting tips
Barcelona will welcome Sevilla to the Camp Nou on matchday 28 of the La Liga season.
Barca will have too much
This is the sort of match in which a team targeting the title simply cannot afford to drop points. Thankfully for Barcelona, we do not envisage them doing so.
For one, Barcelona’s home record this season is magnificent. In 13 La Liga matches in front of their own fans, Flick’s men have triumphed every time.
They have done so in style too, scoring 41 goals and conceding only six. On average, Barcelona have been 2.69 goals better off than their visiting opponents.
Sevilla, for their part, have won just two of their last 11 league fixtures. Barcelona should emerge victorious by at least a two-goal margin on Sunday.

Sevilla defence to struggle
Barcelona’s attack did not quite click at St James’ Park on Tuesday, but for most of this season their forward players have delivered the goods.
Barcelona are – by some distance – La Liga’s leading goal-getters, having made the net ripple 72 times in 27 games.
They have also scored in both halves on 16 occasions, another division high within Spain’s top flight.
As they seek to maintain or increase their lead at the top of La Liga, Barcelona’s frontline are in for a successful afternoon.

Torres on target?
Robert Lewandowski struggled to get in the game against Newcastle United, partly because of a lack of service but also potentially due to his ongoing recovery from a recent injury.
At the age of 37, Lewandowski’s minutes have to be managed carefully and he is unlikely to start against Sevilla this weekend.
Ferran Torres will return to the starting XI and lead the line ahead of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, Barca’s first-choice wide men.
Torres has scored 16 goals in all competitions this term. He only needs four more strikes to make this his most prolific ever season.
The Spain international can move closer to the 20-goal mark when Barcelona host Sevilla.
Tip Ferran Torres to score any time at 4/6 with Betway
