Barcelona fans cannot complain about a lack of entertainment this season.

Just like in 2024/25, the Blaugrana are currently one of the best teams to watch in the whole of Europe.

Wednesday’s meeting with Newcastle United was a case in point. After a 1-1 draw in the away leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, Barcelona were favourites to go through at the Camp Nou.

Newcastle held their own in the opening half, though, and the game was very much alive when Barcelona went in at the break with a slender 3-2 lead.

Yet within a few minutes of the restart, Newcastle were dead and buried. Shortly after the hour mark Barcelona were 6-2 up on the night, with Raphinha then adding a seventh goal in the 72nd minute.

Newcastle had no answers to Barcelona’s brilliance. Sure, Eddie Howe’s side did not always help themselves, but it was hard not to marvel at some of the home team’s attacking play.

Barcelona reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last term. They were moments away from qualifying for the final, only to concede late on against Inter before losing in extra time.

Had they tightened up in the closing stages of that match, Barcelona would surely have gone on to face Paris Saint-Germain in the tournament’s showpiece. The question for the remainder of this season is whether Barcelona have learned from that painful fall at last season’s final hurdle.

Despite their understandable desperation to be crowned kings of the continent for the first time since 2015, Barcelona must not lose focus in the La Liga title race.

Real Madrid are within four points of their arch-rivals heading into the weekend, so Barcelona cannot afford to take anything for granted despite their advantageous position.

Sunday could be a key day in the title fight. Madrid face Atletico Madrid in the derby at 8pm, by which time they could be seven points adrift of the summit of the standings.

For Barcelona, a winnable home game against Rayo Vallecano is an ideal opportunity to pile the pressure on their arch-rivals. 

This sort of game is not as glamorous as a Champions League knockout tie, but Barcelona must approach it with the same level of seriousness as they did the clash with Newcastle last time out.

Do that and their superior quality should win the day.

Rayo Vallecano are not yet safe from relegation, but another couple of wins would probably get them over the line.

However, a six-point buffer above the bottom three is too close for comfort as things stand. Rayo could yet be dragged into the basement battle.

They are unlikely to pull any further clear of the drop zone on Sunday. With home advantage behind them, Barcelona should win this one without too many issues.

With 42 second-half goals to their name, Hansi Flick’s men are La Liga’s highest scorers after the interval. They can add another two more strikes to that particular tally this weekend.

Barcelona ran riot against Newcastle United in midweek, and although they are unlikely to score seven in this one, we expect to see a fair few goals.

Barca’s league games this season are averaging 3.75 goals, comfortably the most in Spain’s top tier.

Rayo Vallecano’s matches have been much lower-scoring; in fact, they rank second-bottom of that La Liga list.

But with Barcelona playing at home, they will decide the pattern of this encounter. That is good news for the neutrals.

Lamine Yamal was in scintillating form on Wednesday night. Newcastle just could not live with him.

The teenager only scored one of Barcelona’s seven goals, and that was from the penalty spot, but he was a menace from start to finish.

Yamal is in fine form. His last six appearances in all competitions have produced six goals. Go back a little further and he has made the net bulge 12 times in his last 16 outings.

Yamal is virtually unstoppable when he is on song. Rayo Vallecano’s defence will have to be at its very best to subdue him – and even that might not be enough.
