Argentina vs Honduras predictions

Before Lionel Scaloni came along, Argentina had not won a trophy since 1993.

At first, no one envisaged that drought ending under the former West Ham United defender.

Scaloni was brought in to steady the ship on an interim basis after World Cup 2018. He only got the job on a permanent basis because he was cheaper than other candidates.

To say that things have gone well in the eight years since then would be an understatement. Argentina have won one World Cup and two Copas America under their current manager. This summer, they will attempt to bring those two tallies level.

No one has successfully defended a World Cup title since Brazil in 1962. In the history of the tournament there have only been two back-to-back winners (Italy in 1934 and 1938 being the other). Never before has a team won the second of those competitions outside their own continent.

That suggests a triumph for Argentina in North America is a tall order. As for the bookies, they consider Spain, France and England as likelier champions. Some also rank Brazil above their rivals and neighbours.

Yet no one would relish facing the Albiceleste in a knockout game this summer. This is a team that knows how to negotiate tournament football. Argentina have won their last 10 knockout ties on the bounce, collecting two continental and one global gong in that time.

Argentina head into this World Cup with a settled side that has not undergone much change since their triumph in Qatar four years ago. Whether that is a positive or a negative remains to be seen. We do not have to wait long to find out.

Argentina vs Honduras betting tips

Argentina face Honduras in a warm-up friendly ahead of the defence of their World Cup title in North America.

Argentina to dominate

It was an unusual qualification campaign in CONCACAF this time around.

Mexico and the USA, the two strongest sides in the region, qualified automatically, as did Canada, who have often been the third-best team in the region in recent years.

That left three automatic berths for the rest of the confederation to fight over. Honduras ultimately fell short, finishing second to Haiti in their group.

Argentina should prove too strong for the Central Americans here. This is the first of two warm-up friendlies the holders have arranged, with a game against Iceland to follow on Wednesday (BST).

Honduras will struggle at both ends of the pitch against Scaloni’s charges.

Argentina attack to shine

Argentina will be without Lionel Messi this weekend, with the Inter Miami star currently on the treatment table with a hamstring problem.

Although the national team captain should be available for the Group J clash with Algeria on June 17 (BST), this match has come too early for him.

That does not mean Honduras will be in for an easy evening in Texas. Their recent matches have tended to be low-scoring, but Argentina represent a few steps up from the likes of Haiti, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Goals are on the cards in this one. Argentina will not hold back as they attempt to find their rhythm ahead of the big kick-off.

Alvarez on target?

Julian Alvarez was a substitute at the beginning of the last World Cup, but he forced his way into the starting XI because of his performances at the tournament.

There is no doubt over his status ahead of this tournament. Unless injured or woefully out of form, Alvarez will be one of the 11 Argentina players on the pitch at kick-off.

Speculation abounds about the forward’s future, with Barcelona and Arsenal among the clubs interested in signing him from Atletico Madrid.

But with the World Cup fast approaching, Alvarez will be fully focused on the international scene. The former Manchester City man will no doubt have his say against Honduras.
