Are Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle playing tonight? Spurs vs. Blazers injury report

The San Antonio Spurs host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night in a late-season Western Conference clash with very different stakes for both teams. The Spurs were handed some concern after Victor Wembanyama could only play 16 minutes after suffering a rib contusion following a collision with the Philadelphia 76ers’ Paul George in their 115-102 win.

Wemby is part of the official injury list and has been listed as doubtful. The Spurs’ prodigy still needs to play 20 minutes for his team in one of their remaining three games in the regular season to remain eligible for individual awards.

He is joined by Stephon Castle, who has also been listed as doubtful due to right knee soreness. Castle played 31 minutes last time around and returned with a triple-double of 19 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds.

David Jones García is the only other Spurs star injured, and is out for the season. The Trail Blazers also have multiple long-term absentees in the form of Damian Lillard and Jerami Grant.

Victor Wembanyama is trending toward missing this matchup after being listed as doubtful. This is despite encouraging news that his MRI came back clean and showed no structural damage.

The Spurs have already locked up a top-two seed in the Western Conference at 60-19, which significantly reduces any urgency to rush their franchise cornerstone back onto the floor. However, Wemby is certain to play the 20 minutes in one of the remaining three matches. He is one of the frontrunners for the MVP title after averaging 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game while shooting over 51% from the field.

Stephon Castle is also listed as doubtful with right knee soreness, which could open the door for expanded minutes in the backcourt. San Antonio has leaned on its depth throughout the season, and younger players like Dylan Harper have shown flashes when inserted into larger roles, averaging 17 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in recent starts.

The stakes are vastly different for Portland, who enter the contest at 40-39 and are only a game behind the Los Angeles Clippers at the No. 8 position. They have won three out of their last four games but come into this one after a 137-132 defeat against the Denver Nuggets.

In contrast, San Antonio have won 12 of their last 13 games and will once again be the firm favorites, especially at home.
