Are Spurs too young? Stephon Castle ‘doesn’t care’

After having to go through the eye of the needle just to overcome the Portland Trail Blazers in Games 3 and 4 to take a 3-1 series lead, the San Antonio Spurs won Game 5 in dominant, wire-to-wire fashion, 114-95, to punch their ticket to the second round of the NBA playoffs. This Spurs team has ascended rather quickly, as most of their core players, the most prominent of whom is Victor Wembanyama, aren’t even on their second NBA contract yet.

One would think that experience would play a huge part in any playoff run, and this Spurs team, outside of Harrison Barnes and Luke Kornet, doesn’t have much in the way of postseason experience. Even De’Aaron Fox, prior to this year, has only played in seven playoff games in his career.

Nonetheless, the Spurs know that they have arrived and their time to win big is now, and Stephon Castle doesn’t care about the naysayers who think that San Antonio needs more time to marinate still due to their roster’s youth.

“We don’t care about that. We’ve seen these teams throughout the regular season multiple times. We know what other teams like to do against us. We have nothing but confidence in each other so we’ll take it game by game,” Castle told Shaquille O’Neal on Inside the NBA following the Spurs’ Game 5 victory.

The Spurs are now awaiting the winner of the Denver Nuggets-Minnesota Timberwolves first-round matchup, which the Timberwolves are in control of as of the moment. However, Minnesota recently lost Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo to serious injuries, which is paving the way for the Nuggets to come back from 3-1 down in the series.

Still, the Spurs have to be sitting pretty, watching those two teams beat each other up before having to take them on in the second round. And with someone like Wembanyama leading the way, Castle is right to be brimming with so much confidence as they head deeper into the playoffs.
