Anthony Volpe not making expected return to Yankees lineup in Orioles series
The New York Yankees put the best record in the American League on the line against the Baltimore Orioles this weekend. This four-game series in The Bronx will be vital moving forward for New York. But the Yankees will not have Anthony Volpe in the lineup to start the series, something many assumed would happen on Friday.

Brendan Kuty of The Athletic then reported, “[Yankees manager Aaron] Boone says Volpe will play in Somerset through the weekend.”
Volpe is hitting second and playing shortstop for the AA Somerset Patriots on Friday night against the Portland Seadogs. As for the Yankees, Jose Caballero remains at shortstop for the big club. They also called up Max Schuemann, who has played shortstop in the past, when Giancarlo Stanton hit the injured list.
“We didn’t get to speak with Volpe on Tuesday or Wednesday, so — and not that I’d expect he’d give us any insight on what the plan was — there were no updates available here. Moderate surprise here that he’s here and not with the big club today,” Mike Ashmore of MyCJ reported.
Volpe underwent offseason shoulder surgery to fix an issue that plagued him throughout the 2025 campaign. He missed spring training, starting a rehab assignment in April. In 33 games across AA and AAA, he is hitting .303 with a .718 OPS. The Yankees traded for Caballero last season in part because of Volpe’s struggles, and he has played well in his absence.
The Yankees have Paul Goldschmidt leading off against the Orioles on Friday night. Ben Rice will be the DH, Caballero is at short, and Trent Grisham is hitting last amid a recent slump.
