Anthony Rizzo takes shot at Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. after ejection vs Red Sox

There’s a bit of panic in New York Yankees land as of the moment after their archnemesis Boston Red Sox swept them in a three-game weekend series on the road. Sunday night was especially heartbreaking for the Yankees, as their comeback efforts went to waste after allowing the Red Sox to score three runs in the 10th inning, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in a 5-4 loss.

In the sixth inning, tensions ran high for the Yankees after second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. got himself ejected after arguing with the home plate umpire on a third strike call on a check swing. Chisholm was pleading rather vociferously with umpire Adam Hamari that he needed to check in with the third base umpire on such a play, but the official was having none of it, ejecting the Yankees infielder from the game.

This did not sit well with former Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who felt as though Chisholm is too important of a player for New York to be getting himself ejected in a game against the team’s sworn rival.

“You just have to be smarter there. Jazz is such a big part of this offense. They need to get him going. To get ejected just shows a little bit of immaturity there. The team’s scuffling, they need him in the lineup, and now he puts (Anthony) Volpe in a tough position coming in completely cold,” Rizzo said on NBC’s broadcast of the Yankees-Red Sox Sunday night contest.

Chisholm declined to address the media on Sunday, with Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reporting that he “left before the media was let into the clubhouse”. This is not something that can happen regularly, especially with New York already missing a few heavy hitters in the lineup, and it will be important to see how the Yankees infielder responds over the coming days to this trying moment.
