Angels sign reliever to minor league contract
On Saturday night, the Los Angeles Angels signed left-handed pitcher Sammy Peralta to a minor league contract after he became a free agent following his departure from the Colorado Rockies organization.
Peralta was designated for assignment by Colorado earlier this week. After clearing waivers, the 28-year-old declined an outright assignment to Triple-A and quickly found a new opportunity by returning to Los Angeles, an organization he previously joined on a minor league deal in May 2025.
The Rockies had claimed Peralta off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers in early April. He was promoted to the major league roster multiple times but appeared in only two games, allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks across 2 2/3 innings while striking out four of the 15 batters he faced. His first appearance with Colorado also was the first major league start of his career, serving as an opener against the Texas Rangers before Tanner Gordon entered the game.
Peralta has now reached the majors in four consecutive seasons, making appearances with the Rockies, Angels and Chicago White Sox. Across 48 1/3 career major league innings, he owns a 5.40 ERA with a 17.9% strikeout rate, an 11.4% walk rate and a 39.6% ground-ball rate.
During his previous run with Los Angeles late in the 2025 season, Peralta logged a 7.59 ERA in 10 2/3 innings.
The left-hander relies on a varied pitch mix despite below-average velocity, typically throwing in the 89-90 mph range with his four-seam fastball and sinker. After introducing the sinker in 2025, he has increased its usage while continuing to feature a sweeper, slider and changeup.
At the Triple-A level, Peralta has compiled a 4.79 ERA over 229 1/3 innings across parts of five seasons. He has recorded a 23.2% strikeout rate and a 7.1% walk rate, with his command improving significantly after adopting the sinker. Last season at Salt Lake, he walked just 4.8% of opposing hitters in 70 2/3 innings, and he has followed that with a 5.7% walk rate and a 51.1% ground-ball rate in the minors this year.
