Angels make Drew Pomeranz injury move on Wednesday

The Los Angeles Angels were forced to make some changes on the roster right before the start of Wednesday’s contest against the Cleveland Guardians. Left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz will be spending at least 15 days away from the team after being placed on the 15-day IL.

Reports indicate that the 37-year-old reliever is dealing with inflammation in his left elbow. In a corresponding move, the organization is activating right-handed pitcher Ryan Johnson from the IL to replace Pomeranz on the roster.

The club’s PR team on social media stated, “Angels transactions: Reinstated RHP Ryan Johnson from injured list. Placed LHP Drew Pomeranz (left elbow inflammation) on 15-day injured list.”

Inflammation in the elbow is typically not great news for any pitcher in MLB. However, the Angels will provide more information regarding the situation in due time. Pomeranz likely suffered the injury during Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to the Guardians, where he allowed one hit and a walk in 1.0 innings of work.

Overall, it’s been a rough campaign for the 13-year veteran. After serving as a consistent option out of the bullpen in three of his previous four seasons (2020, 2021, 2025), Drew Pomeranz has been atrocious for the Angels. Through 15.0 innings, Pomeranz owns a 7.20 ERA (career-worst) and 1.733 WHIP while totaling 12 strikeouts.

His performance in 2026 isn’t doing him justice, as Pomeranz owns a respectable 3.87 ERA for his career. The Angels were hoping for much more efficiency from the 2016 All-Star after he served as a legitimate reliever for the Chicago Cubs in 2025 (2.17 ERA). But the injury doesn’t do Pomeranz any favors either, as he awaits the official recovery timeline.
