Angel Gomes closes in on surprise Premier League return in boost to relegation fighters

Wolves are hoping to get a deadline day deal over the line for Marseille midfielder Angel Gomes, talkSPORT understands.

The Premier League‘s bottom club want to sign Gomes on loan it would also include a buy option.

The midfielder moved to Marseille last summer on a free transfer after leaving fellow Ligue 1 side Lille.

Gomes, who departed Manchester United in 2020, featured heavily at the start of the season under Roberto De Zerbi but has recently slipped down the pecking order.

The transfer window closes on Monday at 7pm.

Out of favour

The 25-year-old has clocked up just eight minutes of action across Marseille’s last six league games.

He was omitted completely from the matchday squad in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Paris FC.

And minutes are likely to be even harder to come by after the arrival of Ethan Nwaneri from Arsenal who went on to open his account for the club on his Ligue 1 debut.

Ready for a dogfight

Wolves look to lure Gomes to Molineux to help the club in their fight against the drop.

The Midlands side are 17 points adrift of safety with survival looking like a tall order.

But the possibility of adding Gomes’ skillset and expertise can only provide a boost to a Wolves side that has shown a shimmer of hope in recent games.

Gomes had been linked with multiple Premier League teams including Manchester United and Newcastle before eventually moving to Marseille.

The midfielder has cemented himself as one of Ligue 1’s brightest talents and that was rewarded with a call-up to the England squad in 2024.

He performed admirably in four outings for the Three Lions under interim boss Lee Carsley.

However, he is yet to receive a call-up under current head coach Thomas Tuchel.

His lack of game time is unlikely to help his chances of making the World Cup squad with time running out to impress the England boss.

One way of doing so could be to secure a move back to the Premier League in the hope of catching Tuchel’s eye.

Gomes has never shied away from the idea of returning to English football.

He said in an interview three years ago: “Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home.

“I would love to come back. But you never know in football.

“I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it.

“I can’t predict what will happen in the future.”
