Andy Reid teases Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs training camp injury status after contract extension

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a busy offseason, recently extending quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract to make him the first player ever with a deal valued at over half a billion dollars. The Chiefs are hoping that Mahomes will be healthy and ready to go for next season after suffering a torn ACL down the stretch of last year.

Recently, the Chiefs got a big update on Mahomes’ status from head coach Andy Reid.

“I loved what he did this offseason, the way he attacked the rehab. He’s on course to get ready for camp. The healing process has to keep taken place,” said Reid, per Nate Taylor of ESPN on X, formerly Twitter. “…Looks like he’ll be able to do some things in [training] camp. …We’ll see where it goes. So far, it’s been a steady climb up the hill.”

Reid also spoke on his reaction to Mahomes’ new contract.

“He’s done a great job as a professional — & off the field as a father, husband. He’s the whole package. … He’s a great representative of the organization,” he said.

Mahomes hadn’t suffered a truly major injury until the ACL situation this past year, which came at a time when the Chiefs’ season was already essentially over.

Last year, Kansas City’s defense took a step back, and the team also didn’t have much of anything in the running game. The Chiefs will hope that the signing of Kenneth Walker III will help to rectify the latter.

The Chiefs are set to kick off their 2026 season on September 14.
