Andy Reid assigns blame after fans blast ‘ridiculous’ Chiefs coach for ‘worst decision of entire season’

The AFC’s bully of the past decade is on its knees.

A 20-10 loss to the Houston Texans at Arrowhead on Sunday night dropped the Kansas City Chiefs to 6-7 this season.

For the first time since 2014, the franchise that has competed in five of the last six Super Bowls is almost certain to miss the NFL playoffs entirely.

Defeat to the Texans wasn’t just bad, it was demoralizing, and will see them slip down talkSPORT’s power rankings.

KC now has just a 15% chance of reaching the postseason, and they will have to beat the odds with a depleted unit.

Left tackle Wanya Morris and cornerback Trent McDuffie both went off injured in the first half on Sunday.

That left the Chiefs without their best defensive back, and Patrick Mahomes working with an offensive line made up of three backups against the NFL’s best defense for much of the game.

Where was Chiefs-Texas won and lost?

Kansas City trailed 10-0 at the break, shut out at the halfway point for just the second time this season, but battled back to tie it at 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

That, ultimately, is where the game was lost — and Andy Reid is taking flak for what some fans have described as ‘ridiculous’ play-calling.

With the score tied 10-10, the Texans punted from their own 35 yard line at fourth-and-1.

Then, with 10 minutes still remaining, the Chiefs were held at their own 31 — but chose to go for it on fourth down.

Reid watched as Mahomes threw an incomplete pass, and turned the ball over. Shortly after, Texans running back Dare Ogunbowale fought into the end zone to give Houston the lead.

talkSPORT reacts... Chiefs fall to 6-7

This feels like it for the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s been a really disappointing season, one that has been derailed by injuries and poor performances across the board.

With a 6-7 record through 14 weeks, I can’t see any way that Kansas City plays postseason football in January.

Perhaps the best thing for the Chiefs would be to finish with a losing record, and rebuild for 2026.

Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid will still be there in 12 months, but the legendary Travis Kelce almost certainly won’t be.

KC has fallen off hard, and there will be plenty to assess in the offseason, including some of those bizarre fouth down calls from Big Red.

Oliver Browning, US Sports Writer.

Kansas City’s offense struggled once more when they got the ball back, and faced fourth-and-4 with 5:31 to play. They went for it again, and failed.

Rashee Rice dropped an open pass that would have produced a first down.

Still, the Chiefs had one more chance to square the game late, but Mahomes was intercepted and any hope of a comeback was stifled.

Andy Reid slammed for costly fourth down decisions

Reid’s decision to go for it on fourth down with plenty of time left in the fourth quarter, after the Texans had been held to five straight three-and-outs, was quickly branded the ‘worst’ call of the season.

“The Texans have done nothing offensively in the 2H to start. With how much time there’s left in the game as well, that was an extremely dumb call by Andy Reid,” one wrote on X.

“The Texans haven’t moved the ball for the entire second half and Andy Reid tells the Chiefs to go for it on 4th down inside their own 35-yard line in a tie game. Coaching incompetence,” another said.

“Boys, I think Andy Reid may be reaching his 2010’s Eagles arc with the Chiefs. Seriously, why the hell do you go for it on 4th from there in a tie game?” a third asked.

A fourth simply concluded: “Andy Reid has lost his mind. Maybe the worst decision of the entire season.”

Fans were left in no doubt about who was to blame for the Chiefs loss — and neither was the head coach himself.

“I thought we could get it. That was the decision. I was confident we could do that,” Big Red said of his failed fourth down attempts.

“I was wrong. In hindsight, it was wrong. We’ve been pretty good on fourth downs, so I messed that one up.”

The Chiefs, an all-conquering NFL dynasty that has won the Super Bowl three times with Reid at the helm, is on the canvas.

With that loss to Houston, Kansas City no longer controls its playoff destiny, and will need a miracle to make another postseason run.
