Andrew Wiggins speaks bluntly on upcoming crucial Heat decision

After the Miami Heat’s loss in the play-in tournament to the Charlotte Hornets, the team is entering a critical offseason regarding who the team will retain, walk, or even move in a trade for a star like Giannis Antetokounmpo. As rumors will surround the Heat and Antetokounmpo, there are other players on the team whose status could be up in the air, such as star Andrew Wiggins.

Though Wiggins declined to speak during voluntary media availability after exit interviews last week, he spoke to The Miami Herald about his contract situation. Wiggins enters an intriguing offseason where he has a $30.2 million player option.

If he exercises it, he’s on Miami’s books for one more season, but if not, he will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career, with June 29 being the deadline for Wiggins to decide. Wiggins would be asked if he’s pondered over the decision.

“Not yet,” Wiggins said. “Me and my agent will get together whenever the season is done and figure it out. But I love Miami. I love being here.”

“I don’t really know how to feel about it,” Wiggins said on if he were to become a free agent. “I’ve never really gone through it. I’m going into year 13. It would be interesting. It would be something I haven’t experienced that I get to.”

Andrew Wiggins on how his experience has been with the Heat

Wiggins has been productive for the Heat ever since being traded from the Golden State Warriors in the Jimmy Butler deal, being a great two-way complementary piece for other players like Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro.

“Everyone has been great to me,” Wiggins said. “From the organization, the fans, to the city. And just playing a winning style of basketball. Being on a team, an organization that really cares for the players, always wants the best for them. They’re very straightforward and all about winning.

Last season, Wiggins averaged 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from deep. It remains to be seen what Wiggins decides.
