Alex Tuch getting $84 million contract from Capitals after Sabres trade
Not only did the Washington Capitals recently acquire Jordan Kyrou from the St. Louis Blues, but they’ve now secured what was going to be one of the top fish on the free agent market this summer.
The Capitals acquired forward Alex Tuch from the Buffalo Sabres in return for a third-round pick, and signed him to an eight-year, $84-million contract, carrying a $10.5 million salary cap hit.
Tuch is coming off a 7-year, $33.25 million deal that saw him earn $4.75 million annually.
This past season, Tuch scored 33 goals with 33 assists, as he helped the Sabres reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2011. He was acquired by the Sabres from the Vegas Golden Knights in the highly publicized trade for Jack Eichel.
Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen recently said that he expects the club to lose Tuch to free agency, having been unsuccessful in his quest to come to an agreement with Tuch’s representation on what they felt was a fair extension to stay in Buffalo.
“I don’t think at this point that we’ve come to any point in our talks that would indicate that he’d want to sign with us,” Kekalainen said via ESPN. “So I think he’s moving on and getting into free agency, and now we’ve got to look at our options.”
“He’s a good player but we have a lot of faith in our group,” Kekalainen continued. “He’s is going to be missed, but we’ll be fine.”
In 615 career NHL games, Tuch has scored 200 goals with 248 assists.
