Aaron Boone adds intriguing arm to Yankees rotation to give Gerrit Cole extra rest

The New York Yankees are going to give starting pitcher Gerrit Cole an extra day of rest. Cole was scheduled to start Sunday’s series finale against the Cincinnati Reds and their ace Chase Burns, but manager Aaron Boone is giving his best pitcher just a little bit more rest.

Cole will get the start Monday when the Yankees go to Detroit for a Monday night game with the Tigers. It appears that Boone is being cautious with Cole as the extra day of rest will keep him from having three consecutive starts on five days rest. The Yankees manager did not say he is worried about Cole’s surgically repaired right elbow, but it’s clear that he does not want to push Cole any harder than is necessary.

The Yankees have promoted Elmer Rodriguez to make his fourth start of the year against the Reds. In a corresponding move, the Yankees sent pitcher Jake Bird to Triple-A Scranton.

Cole has made five starts since his return from elbow surgery. He has a 3-2 record with a 2.57 earned run average. He has pitched 28.0 innings and has struck out 24 batters while walking 8. He has allowed 20 hits and 4 home runs. While Cole has not reached top form yet, he appears to be making progress.

Rodriguez has pitched 13.0 innings for the Yankees and has a 4.15 ERA. He has had issues with his control, as he has walked nine batters in 13.0 innings.

The Reds should have a major advantage in the series finale. Burns brings an 8-1 record along with a 2.01 ERA into the game. Burns has struck out 95 batters in 80.2 innings.
