‘Future Chelsea manager’ who won trophy every 13 games signs contract extension with current club

Filipe Luis has extended his trophy-laden stay with Flamengo after being tipped to manage Chelsea in the future.

The Brazilian has been in charge of the club since September 2024 following spells with their under-17 and under-20 sides.

However, his future had been uncertain with a new deal yet to be agreed.

Luis has now ended any speculation, though, by penning a new contract with Flamengo.

The 40-year-old’s two-year extension will run through to the end of 2027.

It follows their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup earlier this month.

Had Flamengo beaten the Champions League winners, Luis would have clinched the eighth trophy of his senior managerial career.

Instead, he has won seven pieces of silverware in just 88 matches as Flamengo boss.

His run of winning a trophy every 13 matches includes a league title and the Copa Libertadores during his 15 months in the dugout.

Luis also clinched the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup before being promoted to the role of first-team boss.

Luis tipped for Chelsea job

The former left-back’s heroics in his native Brazil have seen him tipped to manage two more of his former clubs in the future.

South American football journalist Tim Vickery believes Luis has what it takes to take charge of both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid down the line.

However, he expects the Spanish giants to be the next step in his coaching career before a return to Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to talkSPORT before the Intercontinental Cup, Vickery was asked if Luis has the credentials to manage Chelsea.

He explained: “Most certainly. He’s a very intelligent young man. He’s only been doing it for just over a year.

“He’s already won everything there is to be won and now they’ve effectively got the last round off.”

Luis won the Premier League during his single season with the Blues as a player, in between two spells with Atletico.

Vickery added: “Chelsea manager, perhaps, but I think there’s one before that and that’s Atletico Madrid, where he spent most of his career.

“There is a little bit, including in his monochromatic all-black garb on the touchline, there’s a little bit of Diego Simeone in him and so I think it’s likely to be Madrid before Chelsea.”

Diego Simeone’s current deal in the Spanish capital is set to expire at the end of next season.

The Argentinian has been in charge since 2011, with Luis winning the Europa League twice and a LaLiga title during his time playing under him.
