76ers promote Jameer Nelson to major front office role

The Philadelphia 76ers have settled on a replacement for former executive Daryl Morey with the hiring of former NBA player Jameer Nelson as the organization’s new vice president of basketball operations, as per Shams Charania of ESPN. Nelson has been a part of the 76ers’ front office for some time now, recently serving as the team’s assistant general manager.

In addition to Jameer Nelson’s new role, as part of the ongoing front office reorganization Elton Brand will not return as the 76ers’ general manager. Assistant general manager Prosper Karangwa will remain with the franchise, however, by virtue of a new contract extension. Nelson’s promotion follows the 76ers’ hiring of Mike Gansey for their top executive position.

In the aftermath of the 76ers’ deciding to part ways with Morey, Nelson was viewed as a heavy favorite to be promoted, as per ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel. Since retiring from the NBA, the former first-round pick has been working within the 76ers organization.

He was initially hired as the assistant general manager of the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, in 2020. He then was promoted to assistant general manager of the 76ers in 2025. His last season in the NBA was the 2017-18 season when he suited up in 50 games between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Detroit Pistons.

The No. 20 overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, Nelson’s career spanned 14 seasons. In addition to the Pelicans and Pistons, Nelson also played for the Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets. He is most remembered for his time with the Magic having been named to his only All-Star appearance in 2008-09 and helping lead the team to the NBA Finals that same season.
