76ers Owner gives ‘green light’ for all-out luxury tax spending

The Philadelphia 76ers cannot effectively lay out their vision for the future of the franchise until they hire a new president of basketball operations to replace the recently-fired Daryl Morey, but they did give fans an indication about their potential spending philosophy this offseason.

“The front office absolutely has the green light to go into the luxury tax,” Sixers managing partner Josh Harris told reporters on Thursday, per NBC Sports Philadelphia. “In fact, we’ve been in and out of the luxury tax, so it’s not an issue. We’re building an arena here. I can tell you that the amount of dollars you spend on that versus the luxury tax, it’s magnitudes more.”

Philly will shell out more than a $154 million combined to Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey during the 2026-27 campaign, which instantly puts the squad in a tricky situation. Although those three stars had varying levels of impact on the 76ers’ comeback victory over the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2026 NBA playoffs, it became obvious that the roster lacked the depth to win the Eastern Conference.

Embiid is arguably the biggest injury risk in the NBA today and George just turned 36 years old. The organization cannot rationally place a great amount of faith in them moving forward. They will obviously still carry significant roles, but the new president of basketball ops must give this squad a larger safety net.

The City of Brotherly Love will expect Josh Harris to hold true to his word and do what is necessary to launch the 76ers into championship contention. These fans are not known for their patience, and a 25-year conference finals drought is only making them more irritable.

Morey’s successor will walk into a stressful environment, but at least they should have ownership’s support this summer.
