5-star QB Will Mencl commits to Oregon

Five-star quarterback Will Mencl announced his commitment to the Oregon Ducks on Wednesday. The Chandler, Arizona native chose Oregon over the Auburn Tigers and Penn State Nittany Lions, announcing his decision on the Rivals YouTube channel.

Mencl, a 6-foot-3, 200–205-pound dual-threat quarterback from Chandler High School, is one of the top prospects in the 2027 cycle. He is ranked as the No. 1 quarterback nationally by Rivals and On3, while 247Sports lists him as the No. 8 quarterback and No. 89 overall player. Rivals also ranks him as the No. 13 overall recruit.

In his junior season, Mencl completed over 70% of his passes (70.3%) for 3,815 yards, 33 touchdowns, and just five interceptions, in addition to 741 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on 118 carries. He accounted for 50 touchdowns and led Chandler to a 10-3 record and a state title game appearance. Earlier in the year, he also participated in the Navy All-American Bowl, going 7-of-12 for 71 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 20 yards.

The commitment gives head coach Dan Lanning his highest-rated quarterback pledge since 2021. Before Mencl’s decision, the Ducks had eight commits. He becomes the ninth and the first five-star in the group. Following his addition, Oregon’s class jumped from No. 9 to as high as No. 6 nationally per Rivals, and into the top five in some 247Sports composite rankings.

Mencl’s recruitment included multiple visits to Eugene, including trips in November, January, and as recently as last week. The Ducks’ consistent pursuit, along with his connection to Lanning and the staff, helped sway his decision.

Oregon’s 2027 quarterback room is expected to be competitive. With players like Dylan Raiola and Akili Smith Jr. already on the roster, Mencl will enter a crowded depth chart.
