4-star RB picks Miami Hurricanes over Ole Miss, Florida State

Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes are building their future running back group, landing four-star prospect Ty Keys in the 2027 recruiting class.

Keys announced his commitment to the Hurricanes on Friday, per On3 insider Hayes Fawcett. Hailing from Poplarville, Mississippi, he chose the Hurricanes over the Ole Miss Rebels and the Florida State Seminoles.

Keys stands out as a four-star prospect with a 90 rating on 247Sports. He ranks eighth among players in the state of Mississippi and 14th among running backs. His composite score of 0.9223 puts him at seventh, 14th and 213th nationally in those categories.

“Tall, slashing runner that’s got a chance to be a featured option on Saturdays. Gashed defenses as a junior in a throwback attack with single-wing concepts, rushing for 3,285 yards and 45 touchdowns to the tune of 10.9 yards per carry. Can tax the perimeter, but has surprising success working between the tackles as he stacks cuts while getting vertical. Quick to identify trouble. Not afraid to drop the shoulder pads. Will build speed, but can lose steam,” 247Sports’ Scouting Director Andrew Ivins wrote.

“Limited production to date as a pass catcher, but turned heads at The Opening New Orleans regional where he streaked free down the sidelines on wheel routes. Projects as a potential impact player at the Power Four level that might need a year to add some bulk, but could still provide early minutes in a rotation.”

What lies ahead for Miami after landing Ty Keys

Mario Cristobal and Miami got a talented player for their future offense. Ty Keys has a skillset that can benefit them as soon as Day 1.

Keys earned his status as the ‘Alpha Dog’ of The Opening New Orleans regional in March. In 2025, he finished his junior season with 301 carries for 3,285 yards (10.9 YPC) and 45 TD. He also set a Magnolia State single-game rushing record with 546 yards and 8 TD in Poplarville’s 60-54 shootout victory against Hancock.

Cristobal and Miami will look to build on an incredible campaign in 2025. They finished with a 13-3 overall record, losing to Indiana to finish as the runners-up in the national championship game.
