1 Saints rookie who stood out most in 2026 minicamp
The New Orleans Saints have to solve some contract issues, but they are focused on a turnaround season. And here is a player with the potential to give them a boost: The Saints’ rookie who stood out most during the 2026 minicamp.
And it’s not a surprise that Jordyn Tyson is that dude. The Saints grabbed him with the No. 8 overall pick. At 6-foot-2 and 203 pounds, Tyson has the size. But there’s much more to his game, according to Scouts Inc. via ESPN.
“As a route runner, Tyson’s quickness off the line of scrimmage allows him to win early positioning,” Scouts Inc. wrote. “He does a good job of coming out of his cuts flat and not drifting upfield. On vertical routes, he excels at stacking defenders to get them in a trail position. His ability to separate can lead to pass interference and holding calls. Plus, his strong hands help him win 50-50 balls.”
Saints WR Jordyn Tyson brings many skills to the table
It’s not just the ability to get open. It’s the ability to secure the catch and then make things happen.
“Tyson is a threat with the ball in his hands after the catch, with quickness and the ability to make defenders miss,” Scouts Inc. wrote.
Tyson could immediately impact the Saints’ wide receiver room, according to ESPN.
“He’s got a complementary skill set to Chris [Olave]… Juwan [Johnson], and the other guys we have,” Saints GM Mickey Loomis said. “So it’s a good mix right now.”
However, Tyson will have to prove he can stay healthy in the NFL.
“I know my body pretty well,” Tyson said. “I’ve endured a couple of injuries so I kind of know. But I’m just trying to learn as much as possible and do as much as possible.”
Versatility is another way Tyson has been standing out in minicamp. The Saints have moved him around a lot.
“I told him that that was going to happen on his way coming in,” wide receivers coach Keith Williams said. “I didn’t give him any pre-knowledge about what the play was going to be because I wanted to see what he can handle, and he dealt with it well today. So I was impressed and encouraged by that.”
What does the Saints’ receiver room look like?
It’s not like Tyson will have a lot of time to develop. He’s already listed as WR2, according to the Saints depth chart on ESPN.
Olave is the clear Alpha receiver. But with Devaughn Vele at WR3, things are getting thin quickly. And the backup group can be considered ugly, with Matson Tipton, Bryce Lance, and Barion Brown not showing a ton of promise.
The Saints know they need to fix the issue, according to nola.com.
“Every quarterback in our league, you know, wants and needs weapons, right?” Loomis said after the draft. “They need guys to get the ball to, and hopefully they can do something special with it. And so I don’t think it’s unique to Tyler (Shough), but I do think that we needed that.”
Head coach Kellen Moore said the team has been looking for the right players to fit onto the team, according to ESPN.
“If there’s a theme, a bunch of high character guys, guys that we love in this locker room, that are going to be great teammates, great people in this community,” Moore said. “And obviously, we certainly recognize the ability for them to perform on the field.”
And a guy like Tyson can help young quarterback Tyler Shough develop.
“I certainly think having some stability there and having Tyler in the position that he’s in, I think certainly gives you a lot of confidence,” Moore said. “And I think it gives a much cleaner picture for players than when they’re looking at this place and, ‘OK, what’s the opportunity going to look like?’ It’s an important aspect.”
