1 free agent Packers must sign after failing to fix problem in 2026 NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers had uninspiring grades in the 2026 NFL Draft. And they made a big mistake. So, here is one free agent the Packers must sign after failing to fix the problem in the draft.
The Packers only had six picks, and they hit the defensive side of the ball hard. They drafted two cornerbacks, a defensive tackle, and an edge rusher. That only left two offensive selections: a center and a place-kicker.
So, is there a position where they could still use help? They could use a free-agent boost in the middle of the offensive line.
Packers should sign OG Mekhi Becton
There’s no such thing as having too many offensive linemen. And even though Becton isn’t coming off his greatest season, he’s still only 27 years old. Plus, he has been good enough to start 45 games over the last three seasons. One of those came with the Jets, then the Eagles, and last year with the Chargers.
If you just look at last year’s stats, they seem to scream “stay away!” Becton was one of the worst guards in the NFL in 2025, according to Pro Football Focus. His overall grade was 35.7, ranking him No. 79 out of 81 guards.
However, in 2024, he ranked No. 16 overall with a grade of 75.3. Injuries played a role in his poor play last year.
The Chargers cut bait with Becton in March, a cost-saving move for the organization. The Chargers saved around $10 million for their 2026 salary cap by releasing Becton, according to Over the Cap via chargers.com.
The current makeup of the Packers’ interior line is Sean Rhyan at center with Aaron Banks and Anthony Belton at the guard positions. Jordan Morgan and Zach Tom are atop the depth chart at the tackle positions.
You have to go back in time a bit for the comment, but it’s positive. And Chargers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh is known as a good evaluator of talent. He seemed tickled to get Becton last year during free agency, according to chargers.com.
“The first thing that jumps out is that he played so good (for the Eagles in 2024),” Harbaugh said. “So big as a run blocker, that presence that he has there.
“But the more I watched him, the pass protection is maybe the best quality, best part of his game. The run blocking, you know, [is] elite. Pass blocking as well, elite. It’s just hard to get around him.”
Becton may have passed his effectiveness time in the NFL. But it’s also possible he hasn’t. It’s hard to weigh last year as the only evidence for Becton and ignore the previous season. Players make comebacks all the time in the NFL, especially if they get healthy.
If nothing else, Becton could be a nice depth piece. That is, if he’s willing to sign as a non-starter with the Packers or any other team.
But one issue with the Packers is they might be looking elsewhere for free-agent help, according to Yahoo.
“That was one thing coming out of this draft, it would have been nice to add a Y-tight end kind of body,” GM Brian Gutekunst said. “We weren’t really able to accomplish that. There aren’t a ton of those guys coming out of college, not a lot of places use them. So we certainly have guys in that room that can do some of that, but that’ll be something we’ll probably continue to look at.”
